Strengthening Maritime Security in the Digital Era

In 2025, the United States Coast Guard (USCG) issued new Cybersecurity Regulations for the Marine Transportation System (MTS) — the most significant update to maritime security since the Maritime Transportation Security Act (MTSA) of 2002!

Effective July 16, 2025, these regulations establish minimum cybersecurity requirements for all U.S.-flagged vessels, MTSA-regulated facilities, and offshore operators. These regulations ensure that the nation’s commercial maritime infrastructure is protected against growing digital threats.

What Vessel Owners Need To Know

If your vessel operates under 33 CFR Part 104 (such as cargo ships, tankers, or offshore support vessels), these new cybersecurity standards apply directly to you.

Cybersecurity Plan & Assessment

Owners/operators must conduct a formal cybersecurity assessment and submit a USCG-approved plan detailing risk management, system protections, and recovery protocols.

Cybersecurity Officer (CySO)

By July 16, 2027, each operator must designate a CySO responsible for implementing and maintaining cybersecurity programs.

Crew Cyber Training, Audits & Drills

By January 12, 2026, all crew, contractors, and personnel with access to vessel systems must complete cybersecurity awareness training. --
